About Us

How our cabin rental came to be:
We (John & Jacquelien) are a couple who loves the Alberta prairies and quiet country living. We’ve been happily married for 31 years. We have 5 children and four grandchildren.

Prairie Rose Cottage was born out of a dream to provide a comfortable guest house for our parents. As a young family, we moved 1,200 kms away from my parents in the year 2000. Of course, Opa and Oma missed their children and grandchildren, but fortunately they were able to visit regularly. Our house was small though and we wanted them to have their own space for their privacy and comfort.

In 2010 I (Jacquelien) found the unfinished building while browsing Kijiji. John is a very skilled and creative carpenter and together we enjoyed this fun project of designing and building the cozy guest cabin! My parents loved the end result and spent many weeks visiting at all different times of the year. Unfortunately, my mom was diagnosed with leukemia in early 2019. They still came to visit a couple of times, but preferred to stay in our house, where mom could receive more care.

Guest House turns Vacation Cabin Rental

This brought us to the idea of opening up the cabin to hosting others. We are privileged to live in the western corner of sunny Southern Alberta, where the prairies and Rocky Mountains meet. We loved the idea of giving guests the opportunity for a vacation getaway in one of the most beautiful and unique corners of the world.

Our dream was to provide couples with a place to reconnect and relax in a tranquil setting that promotes quietness and rest. We felt that a unique, romantic getaway would give couples the perfect opportunity to strengthen their relationships, while giving them memories to last forever. We are thrilled by the response our cabin rental has received and have welcomed guests from all parts of the world. Thank you to all of our previous visitors, and we look forward to welcoming many more guests in the future!

Update: Sadly, Mom passed away in November of 2020. We miss her so much! But we know that she would be happy that many others continue to enjoy “het kleine huisje” – the little house.
